Shandong, China.- A new virus, with no cure or treatment, has appeared in at least two provinces of China, specifically in (east) and Henan (center), but according to the rate of spread they have shown so far, it may are already in other provinces of the Asian country and probably in other countries due to the mobility of those infected through airlines and the ignorance of the authorities about this type of new outbreaks.
The World Health Organization (WHO) indicates that the Hendra virus causes infections in humans ranging from asymptomatic to acute respiratory infections and severe encephalitis.
What is Hendra Virus?
Hendra virus has been detected only in Australia, the reservoir of infection is believed to be fruit bats of the genus Pteropus, commonly known as flying foxes. From bats it can spread to horses causing serious illness. Although the transmission mechanism is not known, the most likely route is respiratory or digestive after environmental contamination. Infected horses can transmit the disease to other horses or occasionally to humans if they are in close contact. Transmission between two people has not been observed.
High mortality, without cure or treatment
According to the WHO, the Hendra virus causes infections in humans ranging from asymptomatic to acute respiratory infections and severe encephalitis, with an estimated fatality rate of between 40 and 75% that “may vary depending on local capacities of epidemiological research and clinical management”.
